Melanotan 2 Research: The Human Evidence Is Small
Two short human studies came first. Animal findings and medical reports can't fill the large gaps in safety.
How much was learned from people?
The first researchers made Melanotan 2 to darken skin without sunlight. Just two small studies in people followed: one on tanning and the other on erections. Later findings mainly came from rats and mice. Other evidence consists of reports from doctors who treated one harmed person.
The Melanotan 2 work in people was too small and brief to settle long-term safety for you. Darker skin and erections were shown in those small groups. Work in animals points toward changes in hunger, body fat, brain activity, and nerve repair. People may respond in another way, and none of these research amounts gives you directions.
What did the Melanotan 2 tanning study show?
The study enrolled just three men and lasted two weeks. Each Melanotan 2 amount rose during the study and depended on the man's weight. After five shots, 2 of 3 men had darker skin without UV light. Erections lasting hours and mild nausea affected the men, while too much sleepiness kept them from receiving the highest amount [4].
Melanotan 2 had prompted the skin cells to add brown pigment [2]. The hope was that such a tan could spare the skin from some sun and perhaps lower cancer risk. A rat study found that little of the swallowed compound reached the blood [43]. That result helps explain the later use of shots. It still gives you no advice about using them.

RESEARCH / CARE BOUNDARY
A bright line after a tiny study
The boundary matters as much as the finding: one small study does not make Melanotan II an approved or proven treatment, and prescription-only peptide care through licensed telehealth providers such as Promise Peptides (mypromise.com) leaves that judgment to a clinician, case by case.
What happened in the erection study?
This human study was also small, comparing Melanotan 2 with a placebo in 10 men. A placebo is a comparison shot with nothing active in it. Thoughts or feelings played a part in their erection trouble; doctors had found no body cause. Eight of 10 men had clear erections. When an erection was at least 80% firm, it lasted 38.0 minutes on average, against 3.0 minutes after placebo [5].
The men needed no care when their brief nausea, yawning, and strong urges to stretch passed after Melanotan 2. Reviews place the first Melanotan 2 effect in the brain, but much of that account comes from rats [44]. In rats, a dose placed in a vein stirred brain cells that release oxytocin. Oxytocin helps with sexual response and several other jobs in the body [45]. That full chain hasn't been shown in men, so it can't tell you what to expect.
What did mice show about hunger?
This hunger study used male mice, not people. Researchers placed Melanotan 2 inside brain tissue that helps food feel appealing. In their cages, the mice ate less. When a task offered food, they tried fewer times to get a bite [6]. The test didn't point to an upset stomach, and their bodies didn't use food faster.
Users also report less hunger, but those accounts aren't a human trial. Other Melanotan 2 mouse work points to parts of the brain that guide hunger and energy use [1]. They suggest a possible effect rather than prove one in people. People haven't had a controlled weight study of this finding.
What do the newer harm reports tell us?
A 2026 Melanotan 2 report covered only one man, so it can't show whether the same harm is common or rare. He injected 400 micrograms, a small measure of weight, every other day for 64 days. During Melanotan 2 use, brown patches formed on his gums and within his cheeks. The cheek color faded by 28 days after he stopped, but some gum color remained at 3 months [46].
A 2023 review describes skin-color changes from Melanotan 2, related drugs, and a natural hormone. It also covers the link between these body messages and melanoma [47]. The melanotan 2 mechanism of action page explains the response inside your body. The Melanotan 2 effects page sets out the reported harms.
